IES lights best practices

I have been playing with IES lights for a couple of years now, and I prefer them over other types. I remember reading it is best to keep the "light" atleast 1 inch away from the model that the light is part of (fixture). I ran a couple of test renders last night on some LED wall packs, the pattern on the ground was pretty close to the mfgrs plot, but I had three "fingers" of brightness on the wall behind the wallpack. I sell these particular wallpacks, and have seen them in operation, in the real world there are no "fingers". I thought about putting the light component inside the fixture to see if that would help, didn't yet though. Next item, linear fluorescent fixtures using the mfgrs ies file. I am not sure if one light component is adequate for a 4 foot fixture to get the right "look" what do you guys do for the best results?

Please take a look at this.

In order to create an IES light emitter material you must have Pro version and the Deep Material editor.
If you have Pro you can select this light emitter material to see how it is made.

Steps for creating IES light emitter materials:
  1. paint face with any color desired for light emitter
  2. apply Emitter template
  3. convert to deep material
  4. Right Click used Emmitance channel and choose "IES Light"
  5. Select the newly added "IES Light" from the list and Browse to IES file.
  6. Select "Radiance" from the list and change color of light to White or whichever you prefer.

Please refer to the help documents and videos linked in my signature.
You have Pro if you purchased a license, search your emails. Pro has an extra button on the toolbar for exploration render functionality. See the videos.
