I'm glad you found a workaround for it, but it's really an issue of adding the mask provided with the .jpg in your photo editor, and saving as a .png with transparency channel enabled. (should be the default, by the way) I use Pshop, so can't tell you about Gimp, but as I know many pros with Gimp, I'm sure it's there. ;)

Additionally, when (ideally) you make a Face me component of this png image, you can always hide those edges inside the copmponent so the won't be bothering too much even in SU (true that the shadow will still be a simple rectangle in SU).

and just one tip for those who incidentally cannot save transparency in png - always save it as a 24 bit image.
