It starts in the sky as a 'stepped leader', but the 'bolt' part comes from the earth through a positive "streamer" from the earth and gives rise to the "return stroke". On the other hand... bolts can leap between differently charged parts of clouds... so :!

In the vid they mention the cloud is the negative...earth the postive.

if you plan on rendering an airplane stopped in motion... this would be a good video to study... motion blur, heat waves, etc.
