as soon as it hits the earth, it blasts back upward

after a little research...

It starts in the sky as a 'stepped leader', but the 'bolt' part comes from the earth through a positive "streamer" from the earth and gives rise to the "return stroke". On the other hand... bolts can leap between differently charged parts of clouds... so

In the vid they mention the cloud is the negative...earth the postive.
