Best Preset?

Post by Dylan » Mon Oct 12, 2009 10:59 am

If rendering time is not so much of an issue on an exterior render, which is the best preset to use?
I have only looked at Easy presets and use 08 Exterior.

Are any of the ones in Tech going to give better results?

Also the same question for interiors. Would I gain any better results than 10 Interior +, with any other available presets.

When lighting the exterior scene with sun&phys. sky, there is no faster nor higher quality IMHO than Preset Easy 08. (ok, so the low-end Easy presets and other tech settings on lower end will be 'faster' but not enough to make up for quality loss, plus Easy08 will likely still give you a faster "preview" than even the Easy 01 'prelim' setting.

For interior scenes, it completely depends on the scene. If caustics are not important Easy 09 will render faster than 10.
For some interior scenes, Easy 02 will give great results... or even specialized LOWER settings than even that... it really depends on the scene and conditions with lights and materials.

For architects in a hurry, Med.+ or Low+ for interiors will be a life-saver. They will produce surprisingly good quality. Especially when we are talking about well-lit interiors (as a rule of thumb we could say this means more than 5 lights, but depends on the scene.)

An interior lit only by Sun& phys. sky, will require High + and even then may not be good enough, depending on the scene... tiny window, etc. Then Easy 09 or 10 will be best. But using sky portal will change everything, and increase render speed for 09 and 10, but increase greatly the render time and quality of Easy 01-08, so if you use sky portal in this case, using Low or Low + will give good quality and speed.

It is quite impossible to give a simple list of 10 easy presets that will meet every need. (note we even created a separate list for animation rendering :!: )
Give some of the "Tech" settings a try, as the "Easy" presets started out as hatchlings of the Tech settings. Some of them will be faster, but the quality of them will vary greatly depending on the situation. There are probably 200 different settings than can be changed for each preset, so you can see it is a complex issue.

The idea of the Easy presets is to make life easy for people that do not want to 'tweak' settings... (average architect in a hurry)... zero time spent tweaking settings = saved time in the end.

best advice:
Start with lower presets (they may surprise you with their quality) and work your way UP the ladder of quality.
